The Lethal Impact of the Heatwave in England: 440 Deaths Per Day

An analysis of the air temperatures in England and Wales in May and June 2026 revealed that approximately 2,700 people may have died due to extreme heat.During the peak of the heatwave in June, an estimated 440 people may have died prematurely each day. The analysis, led by Imperial College London, estimated that the two heatwaves in May and June 2026 may have caused approximately 2,700 premature deaths.The study found that about 38% of the deaths during the June heatwave and about 60% of the deaths in May were likely due to the increased temperatures caused by human-induced global warming.The lead author of the study, Dr. Clair Barnes, stated that extreme heat is now causing a significant number of deaths and that reducing greenhouse gas emissions could help limit the severity of such events.Dr. Mark McCarthy from the UK Met Office, who was part of the research team, said that the early-season heatwaves in May and June 2026 broke temperature records.According to the analysis, climate change contributed to the temperatures being 3 to 4 degrees higher during these heatwaves. Preliminary estimates suggest that more than 20,000 people may have died due to heat across Europe, with approximately 5,500 deaths reported in Germany.
