Over 500 Refugees Feared Lost at Sea Off Myanmar: UN
The United Nations has announced that two refugee boats carrying over 500 people are feared to have sunk off the coast of Myanmar. This incident could be one of the largest maritime disasters in the region. In a joint statement by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was reported that two boats, mostly carrying Rohingya refugees, have gone missing after setting sail from Myanmar's Rakhine state. Authorities stated that while the information has not been confirmed, initial findings suggest that hundreds of people may have lost their lives. According to the statement, the first boat, carrying approximately 250 people, lost contact shortly after setting sail. The second boat, with around 280 people on board, is suspected to have sunk off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region on July 8. Rohingya Muslims continue to embark on perilous sea journeys organized by human traffickers in search of safer living conditions.
