A Giant Iceberg is Heading South Towards Greenland
The giant 'table iceberg', which is 5.7 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide, has traveled over 1,200 kilometers along the east coast of Greenland and is now heading south. The Danish Meteorological Institute's Ice Service has announced that the giant iceberg is expected to break off from the pack ice in the coming days and head towards the Tasiilaq region. It is likely to pass around Cape Farewell due to wind and currents. The iceberg has a striking appearance with its 10-25 meter high part visible above the water, but its main mass is underwater, estimated to reach a depth of 200 meters. This massive block, approximately 5.7 km by 4 km in size, features a flat top and steep ice walls, characteristic of a 'table iceberg'. The iceberg broke off from the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier during the 2023/2024 winter and was trapped in dense ice near the French Island (Ile de France). With the melting of the ice this winter, it began to drift south along the east coast of Greenland with the pack ice.
