Rising Sea Levels Increase Coastal Flooding Frequency

The rise in sea levels is transforming formerly rare coastal flooding events into more frequent occurrences. Scientists have found, based on recent research, that extreme sea level events have quadrupled since 1900, and what was once considered a 100-year flood now occurs approximately every 10 years. The frequency of extreme sea level events along coastlines has increased significantly over the past 125 years due to global warming. This poses a significant threat to many coastal regions worldwide. The lead author of the studies, Prof. Dr. Sönke Dangendorf, stated that human activities have become the dominant factor in sea level rise, particularly since the 1970s.Experts agree that even a few centimeters of sea level rise can significantly impact the daily lives of millions of people living in coastal cities. Dangendorf noted that high-tide flooding, which was once rare, has become routine in many areas. This situation imposes a substantial burden on transportation, infrastructure, and insurance costs.
